Paula Carlson Authors a Citizens Handbook

Paula Carlson, the Horizons Steering Committee co-chair, has written a handbook for the citizens of Wahkiakum County. The handbook focuses on how the County budget works. Paula's intent is to inform her neighbors on how their taxes are used to run County Departments and fund County projects.. Simplifying the budget process is essential for citizen involvement in how County services and opportunities are provided.

Value of Local Businesses

Seven Wahkiakum community members, traveled to White Salmon April 15th to learn more on the value of supporting and building local businesses from author Michael Schuman. Schuman is an economist, lawyer and entrepreneur, as well as author of “The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition.” The day included a presentation from Schuman, networking with other rural Southwest Washington communities, and our own community members working together to identify how concepts learned that day would apply in Wahkiakum County. We identified multiple county assets, such as timber, talent and natural beauty; and discussed how we could add value to them locally and create jobs and wealth at home. Future plans from the day include sharing what we learned via conversations with neighbors and perhaps offering a “Buy Local” presentation or workshop locally. This is a community with many flavors in nationality such as Finnish, Indians and Norwegians . Our Indian Heritage and background is very solid and is reflected in the community amongst many of its inhabitants and the county has been named for Chief Wahkiakum. Cathlamet is located 25 miles west of longview, Washington and is a very old town built in the 1880s.

Cathlamet has a very rural and quiet setting and many areas for fishing and hunting but these are not the only assets that Cathlamet does possess, it also has agricultural land that is very fertile for growing a number of produce products and has had a large background in farming. It is situated along the Columbia River bordering the Oregon Coast and is a historical point along the highway leading to the beautiful Lower Columbia Basin.

1. Community Center Development: Committee is looking at the Old Fire Hall space, partnering
with the City, County and community to create a great Space for all to use.

2. County Communications: Committee is seeking to remove all tolls so that county
residents are truly connected.

3. Community Investment Fund: Developing local investment resources to invest in local ideas
to create enterprise.

4. Citizens Handbook: Committee is developing an easy to read manual that
explains how county budgets work

Skamakowa Grange hosted a free concert by the local music group ELA earlier in October of this year. It was a great success and the concert lasted 2 hours. Former Nirvana band member Krist Novoselic played bass while Sunrise Fletcher played lead Guitar. They had an awesome drummer as well.

The Wahkiakum County Fair this year proved a success. We had some great animal exhibits as well as wonderful musical talent. For the children, a pie eating contest and a karaoke contest.
All the exhibits by our local Granges and members of our community were outstanding!

Steering and Planning Committee....

Wahkiakum County has begun the next phase of the horizon's project. A steering and planning committee has been formed for the community visioning phase,events have been planned we have a guest speaker is in the works to speak regarding poverty and ways to understand it.
The big event is to be held at the Skamakowa Grange on November 29th at 6 PM. Our guest speaker is Dr.Beegle who is an expert in understanding poverty.
In addition,the community visioning meeting will take place on December 1st 2007 at the Skamakowa Grange as well.
I will report more as the events unfold.

Missoula Childrens Theater comes to Cathlamet

Missoula Children’s Theater came to Cathlamet last week, November 5th-10th. They were sponsored by the PTO. They have come to Cathlamet for about the last 17 years. Auditions were Monday; they took about 50 kids and used the next 5 days to put together “Robin Hood”. Their play included songs, sets, costumes, sound effects, and piano accompaniment by Fern Fey. They cast had an excellent time and learned all sorts of acting tips and techniques. Missoula Children’s Theater was founded in 1970 and now has 33 touring teams. They visit more than 1,200 communities, including all 50 states, 2 Canadian territories & 4 Canadian provinces and 16 countries.

Cathlamet Farmers Market Co-op

"Local is the new Organic". A catch phrase used often these days is one way to describe the goings on at Two Islands Farm Market. Two Islands Farm Market is better described as a "Farmers Co-op". The concept was derived whe Rob and Diane Stockhouse and Mike and Kim Howell merged forces to provide a venue where local farmers could provide their products to the community, believing that it is better for the economy and the environment when food is made just a few steps from your own door.
The market has been running for a year now and currently has 10 vendors signed up, selling vegetables, eggs, baked goods, perennials and meats to Wahkiakum County residents. The market will be open every Friday from 3-6pm through October of 2007.

Cathlamet Leadership Training

Our first round of leadership classes ended in great success. We had over 25 people in attendance and all who attended enjoyed the educational experience provided. Carrie Kennedy and Karl Moody proved their abilities as excellent speakers. They educated the group on modules 1 through 9 of the leadership plenty classes. The leadership Plenty classes are designed to educate and assist Wahkiakum County residents on implementing future community leadershp
The classes not only target fundementals of leadership in the community but also address issues regarding sustaining community action in order to address poverty and the civic action required to make change.
The second round of classes that will be held in the fall will again be taught by Carrie Kennedy and Karl Moody. They intend to educate more Wahkiakum residents on what it takes to become successful leaders in their communities.

Climate Convergence

The Convergence for climate action committee, held a series of workshops at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds. This committee is dedicated to Earth-centered, community-based solutions pertaining to the climate crisis that foster local autonomy and self-sufficiency.
Besides the workshops, Willapa Hills and EVLA, which are both local musical groups. Brought music to the event.
Willapa Hills is a folk group spear-headed by local musician Sunrise Fletcher and does traditional folk music. EVLA is a more rock/blues music scene that is also spear-headed by Sunrise Fletcher and includes band member Krist Novoselic who is formerly of Nirvana.
Many people came from all over the state to join in the festivities of this event. Once this event was over, the Convergence proved to be a great success.

What is Horizons?

Horizons is an 18 month community leadership program with five required segments and is funded by the Northwest Area Foundation, whose mission is to help reduce poverty in small rural and reservation communities. Horizons is totally about movement and change.

Leadership Plenty PR Training..

Out of 23 comunities in the state of Washington, Cathlamet has emerged as one of those that is showing promise for the future. Four individuals have gone to the leadership plenty training seminar and have triumphed. Classes were taught intensely for three days and only one out of the four individuals had public relations training. The other three were attending the actual leadership training portion of the seminar.
The seminar was held at the Best Western in Moses lake and the motel was situated beautifully at the side of the water. The setting gave a wonderful environment in which to learn.
